We snagged a beautiful waterfront campsite – overlooking the marina and the City of San Diego. It’s gorgeous! Every morning we look out as the sun lights up the bay…and every evening we watch the sun set over the Pacific Coast. It’s magnificent.
Speaking of magnificent, just about every day is punctuated with the sights and sounds that make military campgrounds just a bit different than other campgrounds. Each military base has its own personality. For Coronado, it’s the music of machine gun fire, low flying recon aircraft, and oh-so-young Navy Seals in training carrying boats overhead chanting cadence! Nights are filled with simulated attacks, aircraft and spotlights, and Navy Seals emerging stealthily from the waters and running to their ground targets. Only for a few hours. And then it’s quiet and calm. Ahhhhh….camping life on a Navy base! We love it!
Today’s blog post is all about the campground. In future posts, we’ll try to share our adventures around Coronado/San Diego and time with friends and family (the best part about traveling is getting to touch the hearts of people we love and, not unselfishly, getting our own hearts touched) ❤️
We hope you enjoy reading the blog as much as we enjoy sharing it with you 😊!
Austin loved digging in the sand! He dug himself a nice, cool spot and settled in while I read a good book and snacked on m&msOh so relaxing! The sun, the gentle waves, a light breeze, a comfortable chair, a good book, an adorable dog by my side, oh…and of course a handsome husband to snap a picZiggy LOVES the water! Such a change from our first trip here in April with him. He walks into the bay up to his chest and just walks and walks and walks. Guess all that pool time with Austin has helped Ziggy gain an appreciation for water! There is absolutely NOTHING better than a massage! There is a wall along the bay walk in the campground. Ziggy worked up his courage and now can jump up and over the wall. He’s learning new skills every day ;)!There is a well maintained dog park (hardly used) at the campground. It’s where Austin gets his Ziggy-free-frisbee -time. And he LOVES it! Look at that smile!!Moments like these are what camping is all about: relaxing with loved onesSome pictures need no captions. Although I will clarify those are Jay’s toes…Thank you Sistah Ilene for introducing me to the magic “Girl Meets Dirt” syrup! Mix it with some vodka, tangerine fizzy water, and an ice cube and you’ve got yourself one beautiful, tasty, refreshing drink on the beach!Frankie has many places he calls “his” in Tinkerbell. But this is definitely one of his favorites- his bed in front of two windows. Constant activity to watch, sunshine streaming in, and the perfect place to cat nap. This is the marina where we are staying. A number of military active duty live full time on the boats while serving at Coronado Naval Air Station. This is Frankie’s safe corner in our walk in closet. He eats here without interruption (not just the dogs bothering him but Jay, the boyish prankster too). He loves his kitty hammock. It’s something we recently got him at home and it’s his favorite place to “hang” out – now he’s got one in his 2nd home too 🙂Like a house, there is always maintenance to be done on Tinkerbell. Jay’s cleaning off the bugs we accumulated on our drive out here. There were lots of them!Another view of the marinaAnother one of Francis’ favorite hang outsOh the excitement! Frankie watched as the neighborhood kids surprised themselves and squealed in fear and delight with their capture: a small stingray! After oooohing and aaaahhhhhing and taking pictures for Instagram, they set him free where he promptly went back to his Stingray community and shared his tale, which will no doubt become a Stephen King- like horror story for generations of baby stingrays to comeThe dogs’ first dip into the bay. We were all surprised at how cold it was (probably 75 degrees). Definitely colder than our 90-degree swimming hole in the Valley!Exhausted. Just. Exhausted. And Tinkerbell waved her magic windshield wand and whispered, “Goodnight Fiddler’s Cove Campground”
