Gaffney Time in San Diego

September 9, 2023

We enjoy Coronado for many reasons.

One of the happiest reasons is because my sister Sylvia, her husband Jeff, and their daughter Darby live nearby!

Darby lives in downtown San Diego, a 15-minute drive (over the suicide bridge) from downtown Coronado.

She spent a Saturday with us walking the beach…

We walked the Coronado Beach as the tide was going out. Darby explained this was the best time to find treasures from the Pacific Ocean.

Looking for sand dollars…

We found two beautiful sand dollars on our beach walks!

And bicycling around town 🙂

We cycled around town and took turns admiring different architectural styles. Darby is partial to Craftsman-style homes.

What a fun day it was!

Of course, no bike ride would be complete in Coronado in August without a flat tire.

This time, it was MY bike that suffered the puncture. Luckily, we were close enough to our car that I could simply ride the flat tire the last few blocks.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with our niece. We talked about all sorts of things – work, roommates, investing, future plans – it was energizing to spend time with such a positive, vivacious, and spirited young woman!

A few days later, her dad came downtown, and we all met at Balboa Park.

We posed for a selfie at Balboa Park.
Jay couldn’t resist trying to mimic the toothy reptile sculpture.

Jeff planned an outing for us to see an adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor, a Shakespeare play.

The performance was in the evening in one of the outdoor theaters in the Park.

I had never been to an outdoor theater performance! It was perfect: the weather, the temperature, the play, and of course the company!

What a fun evening! The play was set in the 1950’s and was performed in an “I Love Lucy” style. It made Shakespeare easy to understand and we laughed the entire time :)!

The play used three sets. The sets were on a lazy-susan-type stage that moved clockwise to change scenes.

Where was my big sister Sylvia? She had just undergone emergency tooth surgery and not surprisingly, decided to stay home.

The next day, Jay, I and the dogs drove up to Carlsbad to spend time with Sylvia (who was still recovering), Jeff, and their dog Summer.

We didn’t arrive empty-handed: we brought several bags of dirty laundry 😉

Ziggy loved Summer! Summer quickly lost interest in the boy who was all googly-eyed for her. She was more interested in the suave, sophisticated (toy-possessive) Austin, of course.

It was nice to spend time talking with my sister. She and Jeff had just returned from a long trip in Africa.

We were able to catch up on a few topics but really could have used another day of couch-talking time 😉

Later, while our laundry made its way through the spin cycle, we joined Jeff and Summer on their afternoon walk through the neighborhood.

We stopped mid-way for some cool-down time in a shady park.

When we returned, I finished our laundry while our hosts began preparing a feast…

Sylvia and Jeff prepared our dinner while Jay prepared dinner for the dogs.

The setting in the Gaffney backyard was beautiful and relaxing.

Once again, we were so busy socializing and eating we neglected to take pictures of the scrumptious dinner: filet mignon, baked potatoes, and brussel sprouts with bacon drizzled with a delicious white balsamic vinegar. Jeff shared a red wine that was delightful – not a hint of oak – just the way we like our reds. Dessert was a homemade cake with fruit and ice cream.

Wow!

Summer struck a pose the rest of us wanted to adopt after our feast!

hat a superb “sendoff” for our day-before-departure! Thank you, Sylvia & Jeff (and Summer)! ❤️
