It was a long day on the road… pretty much non-stop except for a healthy lunch of vegetables, dips, and crackers. We made up for that healthy decision with a late dinner at the only restaurant available near our campsite: Dairy Queen for Blizzards and onion rings!
Lest you think Blizzards and Onion Rings constitute a smorgasbord, they do not. There was another smorgasbord awaiting us…

We had to eat fast because it was getting dark (we had lost yet another hour crossing time zones). It’s very challenging finding your campsite in the dark and then trying to hook up electric and water while pushing out slides without hitting any low tree branches.
Thankfully, everything went smoothly during the evening set up routine. Until…I took Austin and Ziggy for a walk in our new “home away from home.”

You see, our new campground had some things Ziggy had never seen before! And…it had been years since Austin had witnessed these things.
Things like tall grass! Things like knee-high weeds! Things like piles and piles …and more piles of deer scat!
And pools of dark mud.
Oh my! Ziggy was excited!
Ziggy was born and raised in Phoenix/Tucson and had only traveled to the civilized beaches of Coronado Island.
Once he saw grass and weeds, he immediately starting chomping down! And then…the deer poop….oooooh! Talk about a dining delight!

Austin saw Ziggy eating and exclaimed, “Yum!” and joined in on the feast.
It was dark so I couldn’t see what was happening but I knew it wasn’t good 😉
Anyway, no one got sick (thankfully), but we had to keep both boys on short leashes the entire time we were there.

In addition to the grass, weeds, and poop, we got to see another phenomenon we haven’t seen since moving out west…

Squirrels!! You just say the word and Austin reverts to an excited puppy. He LOVES squirrels!
Frankie was a little interested and Ziggy couldn’t have cared less. He was trying to figure out what had excited his big brother.

We left mid-morning for our next stop, a four-hour trip to Fredericksburg, TX (a smaller city south of Austin). We’re planning on staying at a nice campground we know from past travels … hopefully free of tall, tasty weeds and deer scat 😉
