Respite in Fredericksburg, TX

May 24, 2023

Ahhhhh…. A moment of peace.

We arrived at our campsite in Fredericksburg, TX, late morning. It was nice to arrive early in the day, giving us time to calmly pull into our site, hook up, and stroll around the campground before the temperatures rose into the 90’s with 70 percent humidity.

We have become acclimated to the dry air of Tucson, so it’s been a bit of a shock to experience humidity AND heat!

Our Oakwood campground was quiet, clean, and a peaceful place to re-charge our spirits.

We landed at a campground we stayed at many, many years ago: Oakwood RV Resort. It’s a nice home-away-from-home with tall oak trees providing needed shade from the hot, Texas sun.

It’s also pet-friendly, with a well-kept dog play area. The boys enjoyed playing frisbee in the lush grass. Yes, they did try nibbling on the greens, but the grass was not tall nor were there delectable deer droppings to entice them, so they didn’t try to make a feast of the grounds 😉

Our shaded campsite was perfect… except for a night of thunderstorms, which terrified poor Ziggy 😦

After we got settled, we jumped into Leap the Jeep and drove a couple of minutes to downtown Fredericksburg.

You may remember we used to live in a town called Fredericksburg … in Virginia.

Fredericksburg in Virginia is about twice the population of Fredericksburg in Texas. However, Texas Fredericksburg’s population swells with its attraction of well-heeled visitors who enjoy the multitude of Fredericksburg wineries and custom breweries (the town traces its roots to a robust German heritage).

German food! German beer! German chocolate cake for dessert! My German hubby was in heaven!

Which means, of course, the town is brimming with the most delicious food and locally owned curated shopping.

An old Buick dealership has been transformed into a winery.

There were a few t-shirt/souvenir shops but those were the exception… the shops mostly catered to an older, fine-wine-appreciating clientele. The town is about a 90-minute drive to the fabled tech/entertainment money of Austin, TX, and attracts vacationing Austinites looking for a break from their daily grinds.

The town also attracts a few not-so-sophisticated sightseers…

He’s enjoying his favorite flavor: buttered pecan!

Jay loved his authentic German dinner. I loved my authentic, homemade ice cream!

Now we’re talking! One scoop each: cherry vanilla and chocolate chip.

The ice cream shop was delicious and fun … too bad the gas pump didn’t actually work ;)!

You can’t beat the price: .20 per gallon!
